Wildlife Status: Extinct
This extinct subspecies of the Grizzly numbered approximately 10,000 statewide before the arrival of European explorers and Spanish settlers. Domesticated livestock were easy prey, making them nuisance animals to ranchers and farmers. They were aggressively hunted and trapped, with the last bear hunted in 1922 and the last one seen in 1924.
