The Brown Pelican has been the state bird of Louisiana, the “Pelican State,” since 1966. They are the only pelicans found along ocean shores as opposed to inland lakes, they are the only dark pelican, and they are also the only pelican that plunges from the air into the ocean to find its food. They can be found on the state flag, state seal and state painting.
