    Which straw cowboy hats are UPF 50+?

    Gunsmoke and The Original are rated UPF 50+. Jasper and Cowboy Country have open vents, so we do not give them a rating. For the others, check the UPF shown on each product page. We do not rate any hat with open mesh or a brim under 2.5".

    Measure around your head just above the ears and use our hat size chart.

    A straw cowboy hat is the summer workhorse. It's light, it lets air through, and the brim shades your face and neck. Most of ours are raffia from Madagascar, harvested from palm leaves without cutting down the tree. Shapeable styles like the John Stone, Tex and Country Western let you set the brim your way, and the Cheyenne Roper and Billings are classic western shapes.

    Straw. It's lighter and lets more air through on hot days. Felt is the better choice for fall, winter and cooler evenings.

    Hats marked shapeable on the product page have a brim you can bend and set by hand. Shape it gently and let it settle.

    Raffia is a natural palm fiber from Madagascar with a soft, slightly textured look. Toyo is a paper straw that is light and smooth. Both are good warm-weather choices.

    Keep it dry when you can and don't fully soak it. If it gets wet, let it dry naturally. Raffia wrinkles come out with a little steam, and a gentle reshape brings back the brim. See our hat care guide.
