If your hat is stained, a leather dressing can be applied to the outside of the hat. The leather dressing will darken the hat, mask the stain, and make the hat more waterproof. If you're just removing a small mark on the hat, sometimes rubbing the area firmly with your thumb can erase the mark. Also, you can try chalk that is a similar color to the hat. This can soak up an oil mark. Afterwards, rub the chalk off the hat.
This is my second Bill Connor hat - the other being a Bac Pac Oily that is my "fancy" hat. This will replace my Adventure Hat, an 8 year old Barmah that was always too small and too hot but went with me to Mexico, Hawaii, all over the Pacific Northwest, hiking, camping, snowshoeing, etc; that will be retired as it was a gift from my partner on one of our first dates. Finding a new Adventure Hat has not been easy. It needs to be an outback style, rugged, and affordable. It's going to get wet, snowed on, used to fan fires to life, keep the sun off my head in the garden during summer, but also help keep my head warm in cooler weather. This hat feels like it's the one. It's lightweight but the buffalo leather is clearly durable. Now that I have a properly sized hat I can wear a bandanna under it to slow the inevitable sweat stains, and a rinsed out bandanna will help keep my head cool. This also means I can wear a thin beanie cap underneath to keep my noggin warm on those days when a full knit cap is just too much. Plus it looks great, the riveted band-loops are a nice touch.
I am 50/50 on the color though. The dye is not particularly uniform (which I like) but it's significantly darker than the color on the website. The photo with it on the gent is closer than the color on the lady.
Nice leather held together with excellent stitching, the inner band helps to keep hat on your head during strong winds! I got this one for my son as a gift and I have one as well! Our new travelling adventure hats!!!!
I sent the hat back due to issues with the front of the hat doesn’t line up with the top of the hat. This makes the hat look crooked. There was no way for me to correct the problem. Y’all are just rushing with these hats and your quality control if you have one is not doing there job. I am waiting for the return of my money. I returned the hat. I should have checked before I purchased the hat to see if y’all had a phone number. No phone number the only way to contact is email. No one has contact me yet, but y’all can contact me for a review.
Sorry the hat didn't suit you. We get lots of great reviews for this hat but obviously this went under the radar for quality control. That being said, I can see the tracking details for the returning hat shows that it's still in transit. Once we get the hat, we will process your refund.
I was the first one to rate and post about this hat 2 days after Christmas, 2018. I want to post again because I have had the hat for over 3 years and can give some honest feedback. Also I can post a pic. Pictures added were not an option when I posted 3.5 years ago.
As I mentioned in my first post, this hat will go on every outdoor trip and Caribbean trip. It has been on those trips and so much more. It is my winter hat, rain hat, fishing hat, kayak hat, Caribbean (3 trips) hat, and on and on. I get compliments most every time I wear it. I have had is submerged twice (rolled a kayak and fell in a pool), and wear it every time it rains. Not only does it keep its shape, it kept my head dry, except when I go underwater. One rainy trip to Florida got the hat wet for several day, and the leather got a small white salt ring around the crown. I called the company for recommendations and Will Conner answered and helped me determine the best process. I used saddle soap on it one time to help remove the salt ring, condition the leather and help retain the water resistance. The saddle soap did darken it up some but it make the grain pop even that much more. Remanence of the salt ring is barely visible but it just adds more character. And It still keeps my head dry. Signs of a worn hat is the sign of a good hat. But, My hat still looks and wears new.
If you are on the fence about getting this hat, just stop. Stop thinking about and just buy the hat. You will not regret it.
The hat I received was considerably darker than the shade of brown depicted in the photographs, which is slightly disappointing but not a dealbreaker. It fits nicely, looks incredible, is comfortable to wear and appears solidly constructed enough that I expect to get many good years of use out of it.
