This hat is made from weathered cotton that repels the rain and features an inside pocket. Can be packed flat for travel and it floats! Features wide metal mesh screen eyelets for extra ventilation.
What is weathered cotton? It's a mixture of cotton and polyester that gives the hat a leather-like look and feel, as well as water resistant capabilities.
It's best to spot clean all cloth hats with a damp cloth using cold water, or hand-wash in a sink if necessary. We recommend using plant-based soaps because regular detergents can be toxic for our waterways.
Always let your hat dry naturally. If your hat gets out of shape, you can use steam from a tea kettle to reshape it. Hold the hat in the steam and allow it to soften. You can then reshape your hat to its original shape and then let it cool down before wearing.
Another option to take out wrinkles on the brim is to place a clean rag or old T-shirt over the wrinkled area then iron the area.
I feel fully protected wearing this hat. It's packable for travel, has a clip for tying to my jeans, and survived 42mph sustained winds at the summit of Mauna Kea, HI, with no fear of losing it. Others refer to it as my Australia hat. When I put it on in rain, no rain touches my hair, head, or neck. It's waterproofness is perfection and this is coming from someone who lives in a place that rains 142 inches per year. Can't wait to take it fishing. The pocket for my key/ID/CC is cleverly hidden and lightens my load elsewhere.
Overall, the weight, suppleness, and brim coverage make the hat comfortable while blocking the sun. Since it was a bit large on my head and the two sizing inserts were missing (I think they fell out of the box because it was partially open when I received it), I decided to use the chin strap as a hat band. The conversation works well: the hat fits perfectly and I can re-route the cord within seconds on windy days. The materials appear top notch. Now we are scheduled for bitterly cold and wet weather, I expect will hold up and help keep my head warm. As you can see from the pictures, my cat likes it.
WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT! I've always just tighted the cord behind my head but never actually thought of re-stringing it as a hat band! INGENIOUS! Now what I can do next is create a sleeve so that if I wanted to hide the chin strap, I can just string it through that sleeve (which I can make in any color) and tighten it with the toggle in the back. I know it's been done with boonie hats or bucket hats but just didn't for once think I could do this. By the way, if you haven't already, email customer service and the team can send over some size strips for you.
My South African safari hat from 1997 finally died and I wanted to replace it with another waterproof, cotton safari hat for about 3 years. The company went out of business and I wasn't planning a trip back to South Africa anytime in the near future. Conner He acts popped up on my occasional search and had not one, but many to choose from. The style, color and fitting guide got me what I wanted first try. I was on the cusp of sizes, went a little big and was happy to find the inserts to install. One more from a quick customer service response gave me a perfect fit. Could not be happier.
